Well, I happen to come from a third world country where most businesses are still in their survival stage with a larger percentage of likelihood to fail due to the unavailability of enabling systems. This may range from the lack of funds, to basic business skills, all the way to social and infrastructural support and incentives. The consequence of this is that these small businesses still run with a home address, from basements, shared tables or at most a small kiosk. This is fair enough considering that most times, they were set up just for the sake of human survival. This refers to meeting the basic needs of the owner, nothing more nothing less. Then on the other hand, most of what we would love to call our big corporations is sometimes owned by people whose purpose of starting a business seems faulty also. A large chunk of these big businesses, especially in this part of Africa, were originally set up to launder stolen wealth from politicians and criminals. So the main aim wasn't to build a trans-generational business but that of bad wealth invested, causing it to lack the zeal and due competence to grow. In all these analysis, we see a need, the need to be in business for the right purpose. Purpose breeds passion and in the words of Oprah Winfrey, “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you". The foundation of a business is already faulted when there is no purpose. In business, it’s always best to have a definite purpose. If you do not know where you are going, then everywhere you get to will look like it. People who have started and succeeded at what they do most times have personally been able to discover who they really are, where they really want to be and what they want most definitely, especially in their lives and then in business.
As an entrepreneur, one of the most important questions to ask is the question of “what do I really want most from what I do?” THE JOURNEY IS LONG BUT THE DOOR’S RIGHT HERE Purpose is the key in business development and growth, else we fall to distractions. To be successful, the first thing to do is to first fall in love with your work. Trust not in what inspires other members of society to choose a career. Trust what inspires you. Personally, I’ve always wanted a brief outline as to how one can easily identify purpose, whether in life, career or in business. And I’ve come to the conclusion that it all lies in self discovery. The journey of a thousand miles, they say, starts with one step. Purpose is that door and the first step is to discover self. In achieving this, an average person should be able to create a business simply by being able to discover, on a personal level, the following
1. What we want most;
2. What we think about most;
3. How we use our money;
4. What we do and will want to do with our time;
5. Whose company we enjoy;
6. Who and what we admire;
7. What we laugh at. These seven keys if found on a personal level help mould where our passion and comfort zone lie. As a lover of the sport, basketball, one thing I noticed is that in a basketball court, every good player has a spot within that court that he can easily stay at and most likely have his best shot. So it’s in every great coach and even the player to be able to consciously identify this place and ensure that most of his shots are taken from there as often as possible. This may be hard when in play, considering the defensive and tackling nature of play. But still, the purpose of a player and even the team is that all workarounds be created in such a way that most shots are taken from there.
This concept is relative to business. That spot is relative to our comfort zone and our purpose is that we make sure to find that spot and try out our best shots (effort) from there. This is the purpose of every step in the game, and also in the game of business. In the game of business, it’s not a good business practice to go into the corporate world without a definite purpose of being able to take our best shots from what we do best. Several times in business, we go in as if we are just randomly trying to take shots at the net, and all we have is hope that it favours us. Sometimes we bank on luck; we hope the odds would not be against us, we hope for a miracle, at that point, we move randomly and then start hoping to find purpose on the way. In business, purpose should always come first. In business, purpose is the key. I’ve seen people start businesses for different wrong reasons, and in our part of the world, people usually start businesses as an escape route just to survive and get by or in the other case, just to stack money. People who do this most times usually don’t get past just getting by and surviving. I’ve always suggested that before you even start or begin to think of truly growing a business, find a greater reason beyond survival and making a living. This should start from the purpose of trying to add tremendous value, and profitably so. In all you do, always be purposeful in having a sound business, growth, expansion and exit (succession) plan. This may be hard. But still, take that painful step of finding the truest purpose and in doing what you need to do, even if it feels hard. Finding purpose is the sacrifice you need to make. Sometimes in business, we may feel like giving up, but it is finding that great purpose that shows up as a true reminder of why you are there and even chose to do what you’re trying to do. Finding true purpose is finding the inner proof of desire much greater than the challenges we face.
CHECK YOUR PURPOSE
Just in case you are an employee, engaged to a job you hate, please note that business should be an entrance to where you need to be and not an exit route from where you don’t want to be. Business is not easy; sometimes it’s even harder than the job you hate. So, before you run from your present job, know and define what you want to run to. The easiest way to excel in enterprise development is for you to develop an enterprise around your life’s purpose. Once you can identify this, you align with the timeless principles of attraction that states that whatever you focus your attention on is what you attract more of. Align your business with what you think you were created to do. Finding purpose helps in finding the genius in you because everyone has a genius within that might never be discovered. Deep within us is the power to change our own world if only we can find our purpose here on earth and through everything that we do. But except we connect with our purpose, we may just be struggling to live. Business is like this; if we judge a fish by its ability to fly and a bird by its ability to swim, then we derail them from their purpose, causing them to feel inadequate and unsatisfied for the rest of their lives. Excelling successfully in our purpose is the significant achievement needed to succeed at what we do. It is an innate power that can be found within us and used as the fundamentals of where we need to be in enterprise development. When it comes to purpose, everyone can, but not everybody will identify a purpose in life. But when you do, and when you pursue it, you will be living the kind of life you feel you were meant to live. And that’s finding purpose. Finding your purpose begins when you can converge what you can do best, what people like best about you, your talent, and what you are passionate about. Now, these three guidelines stated below can surely help you find your gift and purpose.
Look within you, past experiences, think and find the following:
1. That thing you do very passionately and so easily that it feels effortless to you, no matter how hard it may be for others to do.
2. That thing that you get annoyed or irritated when someone else doesn’t do it well, knowing and being sure that you can always do it better.
3. Then that thing that you’d do, and still love doing, even if you’re not paid. There’s a gift within you. Find it, make it work, make a living and make a difference in your life, your world and that of others from it. This is how to find your purpose.
There's always a need to have a clear cut reason for where you're going and why you're going there. There's always a need to know why you do what you do. There's always a need to define where you are going to Once you identify your purpose, there are a few steps you may need to take.
These steps are outlined below:
Step 1: Create and hold a picture of where you want to be long enough in your mind and you'd have succeeded with the first steps of giving it the power to exist, its life's ultimate law of attraction.
Step 2: Stay focused, consistently remembering that image of where you want to be. Plan, and afterwards, be ready to take actions. Start.
Step 3: Keep going. Stick to your goal especially when you're sure it’s worth it. Do not be distracted by others. Think out of the box. Do not allow the outside noise drown your inner voice. Look within you to find your inner proof of desire. Never allow your happiness come from the admiration and approval of other people.
Step 4: Prioritize, not everything that is counted counts. Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things. Be deep, be serene, be aware, and be sound. Create a hold, create networks, create alliances, and then begin to create your own world.
Step 5: Be emotionally intelligent. Most people are more sentimental than logical, blindly judging by feelings and appearance, but you'd be judged mostly by your actions and not by your intentions. Take this as an advantage.
Step 6: Create a brand with your purpose. Be "you"nique, be a brand. Move with sway, appear enchanting. Be creative with your approach but first, be strategic with your moves. Go further ahead, learn, unlearn, relearn, make mistakes, make adjustments, and then make your way back.
Step 7: Be in continuous improvement simply by always being on the lookout for what to start, what to stop and what to keep doing knowing that we become what we repeatedly do. To have clarity of purpose is a strategic step to take in business. Defining purpose at the start would help define success in the end. Take for example, if a car manufacturer has a purpose to build a car, and then he goes ahead to do this and then he puts the car on the road and the car functions according to the manufacturer’s specifications, then the car is a successful product. But if the manufacturer produces a car with the purpose of being a car and then he finds out that it’s being used for something else other than as a car; maybe it’s being used to store things, then the product is being misused and its purpose defeated. So it’s safe to say that its ones purpose that determines what success is and should be. In the business world, purpose and imagination always go together. We, our choices, actions, and thoughts, are limitless and powerful. In all, man’s greatest form of intelligence is imagination, out of which we create. Thoughts and ideas are powerful and when filled with a definite purpose, a will and consistent series of progressive actions, then the world gives way for their fruition. This is how the world got here. To master these steps is to succeed. As you venture and grow further in business, please note that the purpose of every successful enterprise comes from them being able to define what they want, what they do and where they are going. If you really have a purpose and you want to do something you will find a way, if you don’t you will find an excuse.
If your purpose is larger than your excuse, then you also should be able to mould your purposeful ideas into elements of business growth. Every innovation, concept, value, and even technology and business, is created from a need, a purpose. As a matter of fact, everything in existence was once an idea. But your purpose is to give life to your idea by your expert knowledge and power to visualize, make the right choices and then take the best actions from its conceptualized form into success in fruition.
